It’s not apparent from my photos but you can feel bits of chunky Tokachi adzuki bean in your mouth as you bite into the moist sponge cake. The difference was the centre is filled with Uji matcha & sweet red bean paste cream. Same as the other 2 Ginza cakes, it features the trademark fluffy sponge cake. It happens to be the first product featuring a Japanese flavour. I would say the taste is suited more for children.Īt the time of our visit to Japan, Matcha Cake from Ginza ( Ginza no Omatcha Cake) was a newly released item. I found the strawberry jam like filling a tad too sweet, although the sponge cake had a cute and attractive design. Since I’ve bought the chestnut flavoured cake, I also took a box of the classic Strawberry Cake. Rich and creamy, best of all it’s not too sweet. Wrapped inside the fluffy sponge cake is a layer of puréed marron cream and a layer of caramel flavored custard cream. With Chestnuts being the Autumn delicacy, this is a seasonal item not to be missed. The Strawberry Cake from Ginza has been around for a while but it didn’t pique my interest, until I saw The Mont Blanc Cake from Ginza. If I’m not wrong, the Ginza cake series by Tokyo Banana is not new. So you’ll need to check the stocklist from the Tokyo Banana website here beforehand to save some time. You may have to go to a few stores to get all the flavours you want. However one thing to note is no single shop that sells the full range of flavours (assuming you intend to buy the Ginza series at the Airport as well). Technically speaking, you can get a comprehensive variety of Tokyo Banana products within the restricted zone when you depart. Second batch was bought just before I depart from Haneda Airport. The shopping alley was meant more for departing guests who wish to purchase some omiyages before they fly off. First batch bought upon landing, where I went to the souvenir shops that guests can go to freely outside the restricted zone. I bought the different flavours of the Tokyo Banana and Ginza series at 2 different airports. Do remember to go to the Airport in advance (i.e more than the usual 2 hours buffer) if you intend to make last minute purchases as there are always long queues for payment at BOTH Narita and Haneda Airport. Dust with Powdered Sugar to make the cake look like snow-capped Mont Blanc. This is a continuation of my earlier post about my haul of Snacks & Food from Tokyo (Part 2). Pipe out the Chestnut Paste Cream on top of the cake and decorate with remaining Chestnuts.Slice the cake in half and spread over the Cream combined with chopped Chestnuts, then sandwich with cake top.Add Sugar, Rum and coarsely chopped Chest Nuts to the rest of the whipped Cream and mix to combine. This Chestnut Paste Cream goes into a piping bag attached with a small round tip. Place Chestnut Paste in a bowl, add Rum and mix to loosen, then add half of the whipped Cream and mix well.Mix Eggs, Sugar, Milk, Oil, Vanilla and Self-Raising Flour until smooth, pour into the tin and bake for 30 minutes or until golden.Line side and base of 18cm springform cake tin with baking paper. The cake always ends up domed shape which is good for the ‘Mont Blanc’. This ‘Mont Blanc Cake’ doesn’t look so fancy like the one she bought me that night, but it tastes wonderful and of course it always brings back the memory.Ģ00g Chest Nuts *peeled & cooked (canned whole chestnuts), coarsely chopped, save some for decoration When they finally came home, I discovered where they had been, then my daughter offered me the cake. And luckily the cake shop was still open that night. She remembered that I once told her that ‘Mont Blanc Cake’ was my absolute favourite. She navigated him to a cake shop, where she had seen a particular cake before. One winter evening, it was already dark when my husband came home from work and my daughter asked him to drive her to a place. My daughter was only 6 years old then, and she knew I was not well. When we were living in Japan for a short period of time, my condition deteriorated and I was just staying home being sad.
